How to Get Noticed By A Brand

Social media is ever-changing, and it is important now more than ever to understand the algorithm to reach your end goals as a stylist. Do you want to be behind the chair in the same salon your whole life, or do you want more? 

The beauty of our industry is the vast amount of opportunities to diversify your portfolio: brand educator, brand manager, color expert, influencer, and the list goes on. Check out the tips below to build your portfolio and get noticed in order to take the next step in your career!

  • Do your research

    • First and foremost, know who you are speaking to when you create the post. Are you speaking towards fellow stylists or future clients? There is no wrong answer, but it can be tricky to speak to both in one post!

    • Choose a brand you like and that matches your values. Then try and match their brand's style. Brands often utilize UGC (User Generated Content). Getting reposted is a great starting point to your relationship with your desired brand. 

    • Find your brand’s hashtags. Don't just assume that they are the brand’s name. PRO TIP: These are often posted on their bio… or see what hashtag(s) they use on their photos.

    • Make yourself accessible. Your bio should tell the consumer/brand exactly where to find you. If you don't have the below information already, add this to your bio now!

      • Full name

      • Location

      • Specialties/accomplishments

      • Contact info

  • Analytics - Followers don't matter. This is a HUGE misconception with social media. Look for quality over quantity.

    • Comments - Brands look for people leaving meaningful comments (i.e. questions, formulas, booking questions). PRO TIP: Leave meaningful comments on other stylists’ social media pages to help build connections.

    • Tag the brand - Tag the brand in the comments and the actual photo. Photos can get lost if they are not tagged in the photo.

    • Learn best practices - Search what analytics you need to pay attention to. Figure out what posts get the most engagement and match that.

    • Post consistently - Whether it's twice a week or every day, stay consistent.

  • Things you should be doing now - diversify your content. Everyone loves to see photos of beautiful FINISHED hair, but here are some ideas of additional content you can create.

    • Diagrams - Intriguing to everyone's eye, they show education without a long caption.

    • Unboxing videos 

    • How-to videos

    • Swatch test demonstrations

    • Caption - Educate! Your caption should authentically show you and your art. Although not every caption needs to be educational, make sure it's something people can respond to. If you are trying to catch your brand's attention, include the specific products you used (at the very least) and why or how you used them. PRO TIP: This is important because if you do get the brand’s attention, they are going to want to know what you used, and you want to make sure you can answer that.
